In a story that can best be described as a tale of missed chances, Barcelona surprising slumped to their first defeat of the 2020–21 La Liga season under new manager Ronald Koeman, after a 56th-minute penalty scored by Jaime Mata ensured all three points for Getafe.

The visitors who had previously been 12-time winners at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez began the late-night La Liga kick-off on Saturday with a flurry registering the best-attacking move of the half after Leo Messi was denied by the woodwork and Antoine saw his one v one effort fly sky high over the crossbar.

New signings Sergino Dest and Pedri made a brilliant showing in the first half proving why Barcelona and shelled out the cash to ensure their respective signatures. Pedri was particularly impressive in finding spaces down the middle of the Getafe defence linking well with teammates with only the final ball missing while Dest had shown that his training at FC Ajax made him a perfect fit for the Barcelona style of play. …

When FIFA thought about the very modern Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the aim was to increase transparency in arguably the most-watched sport in the world. However, since implementing VAR in local league games, there have been a number of eyebrow-raising calls that have left fans reeling and neutrals scratching their heads.

When I set out to finally begin my YouTube channel shortly after the pandemic hit, I didn’t know it would be so hard to build a following. I am not quite sure what my expectations were but having researched how to build a YouTube channel, the steps seemed simple enough. I was used to consuming content from people who had subscribers in the thousands and honestly, maybe its ignorance or arrogance or a combination of both but I have never thought to stop and consider their days of little beginnings.

I remember uploading my first video on YouTube, in hindsight it was not the best quality but the content sure was funny enough. I remember sitting by my phone waiting for the views to start pouring as I was used to seeing on the channels I followed. You can imagine my disappointment when after an hour I only had 5 views and 3 new subscribers (family members). I needed to be proactive. I started sharing my links to everyone on my social media and I mean everyone. From Whatsapp to Instagram and Facebook in a bid to secure more following. I had imagined since they followed me on there, then they wouldn’t mind following me on YouTube. I imagined wrong. The experience has forced me to review my past behaviour on the platform because I too have consumed content on other channels while conveniently forgetting to subscribe. …

A few weeks ago, I was discussing with a friend, and somehow for that day, the conversation had been about girls who often traveled overseas to engage in prostitution and how often they were judged without given a moment to tell their stories or share the circumstances that led them there. He told me of this girl he had met whilst abroad briefly and how her story differed from the norm.

She hadn’t gone overseas to become a prostitute, far from it. When she suddenly lost her parents and life had become bleak, her guardian was contacted by a family friend who had informed them of the opportunity for her to become a receptionist abroad at a hotel. She had had to stop school because of the recent tragedies and so when this opportunity came up, it was like a God-sent. Her arrival at the designated country provided a different reality from the one she had envisaged. She wouldn’t be working in any hotels, at least not in the capacity she had thought. With her passport and means of identification seized by her sponsors, she was told she’d have to sell herself to pay off a certain sum of money to earn her freedom. With no way of contacting home, no identification in a foreign country, no means of going back to Nigeria, and in the hands of traffickers, she suddenly found herself a prostitute. …
